GHGx© Corporation (Greenhouse Gas Exchange)
today announces the successful demonstration
of the worlds first real-time, on-line trading
platform for greenhouse gas emission credits as mandated
under the Kyoto Protocol, which becomes international
law on February 16th, 2005.
John Kourtoff, a director of the Toronto-based
company, stated that The GHGx greenhouse gas emissions
trading exchange provides a comprehensive, global solution
to the real-time trading of greenhouse gas emission
credits. A properly structured global exchange, built
on open standards and accessible via standard web browsers,
will provide buyers and sellers from around the world
with an open, transparent and verifiable best
price for emission credits. He went on to
state that: The GHGx exchange is the worlds
first on-line, real-time exchange built after the widespread
adoption of the Internet designed specifically for a
new global commodity Greenhouse Gases.
A trade was demonstrated that transferred credits representing
10,000 metric tonnes (1 metric tonne = 1,000 kilograms)
of carbon dioxide between an anonymous buyer and seller.
The trade took place at a price of CDN$7.05 per ton
and at a transaction cost of 14¢ per tonne (2%
of the traded value).
Emission credits (sometimes referred to as Kyoto Credits
or carbon credits) are a creation of the Kyoto Protocol,
the international agreement aimed at reducing the amount
of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released
by human activity into the atmosphere. The excessive
release of these gases is considered to be the main
cause of adverse global climate change.
By creating a fast, efficient, transparent, and low-cost
market for trading emission credits, GHGx is playing
an important role in the development of low-emission
energy alternatives in Canada and around the world.
